Transport

Since the first roads were made in Shetland 150 years ago, road transport has increased. Photographs show early travellers, from wealthy people in carriages, to farmers with their carts. After the invention of the bicycle, people could travel quickly over longer distances. The first motor vehicles were motorcycles, and proud owners were often photographed with their bike. Once cars became affordable to ordinary folk in the 1940s, they were common on the roads too. Photos also show local aspects, like transporting peats. Aircraft visited Shetland in the 1930s, and a permanent link to the mainland was established soon after. The landing of an aeroplane was memorable enough to take a photo of, and many are represented.
