Breaking up a steeple on the beach at South Haven, Fair Isle, 1890's. After the fish, usually ling, were salted they were spread on the beach to dry, and once dry built into a stack called a steeple. If rain came during the drying the fish had to be stacked and covered with a tarpaulin, and respread once the beach was dry, as these men are doing. Behind them can be seen a covered steeple. Left to right the men are: James Wilson (Haa), Jerome Wilson (Kennaby), Robert Wilson (Springfield), Stuart Wilson (Springfield), Robert Wilson (Gaila).
