The Cradle

This picture is taken looking in an easterly direction on the Island of Noss. This gap between Noss itself and the Holm of Noss can be observed. At one point in time (circa 18th century) the gap was bridged by means of a rope cradle, known as the Cradle of Noss. It was a device whereby a basket was hauled accross to the Holm by means of ropes fixed horizontally accross the gap and people or livestock could be conveyed thus. The livestock would have been sent over to graze, whilst the people would have gone accross to gather bird's eggs for food. For more information about the Cradle of Noss see ART 2002.247. For pictures of the Holm from seaward see WR00112 and AR00017.
