Whale carcass alongside a factory ship at South Georgia, near Antarctica. If a lot of whales had been caught, some would be moored to the ship, or to a nearby buoy or boat before until they could be hauled on deck for processing. Whenever supply ships came alongside the factory ships to give them fuel oil and take off whale oil, dead whales were used as fenders between the two boats. This sometimes took a few days, and by the time they had finished the whales would be rotten. However, they would still be hauled up on deck, cut to pieces and then steam cooked to extract their oil.
