Whale catcher with catch
1930's
Whale catcher and two dead whales at South Georgia. Every now and then whale-catchers went to a factory ship to refuel. They would pick up a few dead whales on the way and deliver them to the factory. One whale would be kept alongside to be used as a fender. While they were there they would give their used harpoons to the factory ship's blacksmith to be straightened, and would take on fresh food supplies. There was a shop on the factory called a slop chest, where the catcher's crew could get clothes, chocolate, cigarettes, toiletries and anything else they needed.
