Description
Landscape South Georgia. Towards the end of the 19th century Antarctica was still largely undiscovered - it was one of the world's last frontiers. Many explorers took on the challenge of Antarctica - there was Capt. Scott with the Discovery, Ernest Shackleton with the Endurance besides many others. In 1903 Capt. Carl Larsen was master of the ship, 'Antarctic', which was undertaking an expedition. They got caught in the ice, and were eventually picked up by an Argentinean ship and landed at Buenos Aires. Larsen, well aware of the potential whaling opportunities, raised capital and founded the company Compania Argentina de Pesca, now known as Albion Star, who became pioneers of the Antarctic whaling industry, founding the first station at Grytviken in South Georgia in 1904
