Government base at South Georgia

Government base at South Georgia; King Edward Point, taken from Grytviken station. The base consisted of a magistrate, a policeman/handyman and a radio operator. There was a also little jail among the government buildings, but this was used mainly to house visiting scientist and explorers. Shackleton's memorial is just visible as a speck on a small knowe bearing behind the station. See photo W00219. South Georgia has never attracted any settlers beyond whalers, government officials and scientists. There is little vegetation beyond tussock grass and mosses, and there are no native land animals, but penguins and seals thrive on the rich fish and krill.
