Selling haddocks at Victoria pier
1890's
Selling haddocks at the head of Victoria Pier in the 1890's. One man hands over fish, whilst his companion ties fish together. Boy near boats mast holds money in his hand awaiting his turn. The fourareen is of interest in that it has a standing lug rig rather than the traditional square sail. On the pier are stacked turbot boxes, and above mast tip stands the trams of a cart. Women wear haps. the man with the fish is Henderson Thomas Anderson my great, great grandfather. He was born on 1 March 1862 and died on 22 May 1923. He lived at Roadside Cottage, Ham on Bressay and was a fisherman. The person bending down in the boat is likely his brother William.
