White fish station and Scalloway castle
1890s
Hay & Co.'s white fish station at Blacksness, Scalloway. Fish, landed by the smacks, are drying on the man-made drying beach, those already dry are built into a steeple. Long building is the fish house, used for the storing of the dried fish, and for ice. (Live fish were landed from well-smacks, and were packed in ice). Barrels of salt are stacked up, and lying on top of these are tarpaulins, used to cover the steeples to protect them from rain. Wheelbarrow and handcart at right. Bell-tower at left of the fish house, the bell being for summoning the workers. Building at left is Hay & Co.'s shop, at right is Blacksness House (tenements).
