Description
Baltasound Police Station. Ivy Cottage and Reading Room in background. The lock-up was at right. Staff of station were Edward Barclay (Sandwick), Jeemie Laurenson (Fetlar), Donald Sutherland (Unst). E. Barclay was officer in charge. A Police station was necessary at Baltasound because of the herring fishing boom; on one weekend around 1905 the Police did a census of population in and around Baltasound, which showed 16,000 people. This vast number was caused by the station crews of gutters, coopers, carpenters etc., along with affected trades likes merchants. All the hundreds of boat's crews were there, along with cargo ships, mostly Russian and German. This all in addition to the permanent population.
