Soldiers of the Burwick cable guard pose with rifles behind an earthwork. The guard were soldiers of the Shetland Companies, Gordon Highlanders. The cable guards were responsible for guarding the landfalls of the telegraph cable to Shetland, such as Sandwick, Burwick, Belmont. In background is the croft of the Morrison family (officail postal name Seaview - but never used in everyday practice!). Outhouses at left, dwelling house at right.
