Lerwick from the Old Battery

Coloured Lithograph of Lerwick from the Old Battery.

The Battery was located on what is known today as the Knab, on the south side of Lerwick. It was a coastal defence set up in the 1790's during the Napoleonic Wars. It afforded a commanding view of ships approaching Bressay Sound from the South. There is no longer any evidence of the Battery but the cliffs at the Knab are still known as Battery banks.

Shetlands first road was constructed between the Battery and Fort Charlotte by the naval authorities to allow the transfer of guns to and from the garrison and the battery. Part of the route ran along what is now called Law Lane.
