Engraving "Fig. 3. Fort and Town of Lerwick." shows the seafront of Lerwick in the early years before the influx of herring stations that populated the area in later years during the height of the fishing boom.

The fort in the forground was built in 1665 by master mason John Mylne for Charles II to protect shipping in the second Dutch war. Reconstruction followed in 1780 and it was renamed after the wife of George III.

Today the fort is home to the TA and Army Cadet force having been accommodation for town batchelors and in the mid 19c the town prison.
