The plan at Grytviken, South Georgia. This is where the whales were cut up and the various parts sent to different parts of plant for processing. During the late 1950s pet food companies became interested in trying to use whale meat in their cat and dog foods. Tønsbergs Hvalfangeri, who ran a whaling station at Husvik on South Georgia, were persuaded to put up a plant for the venture. The pet food venture was not an economic success. By that time whales had long been over-hunted in and around Antarctica, and they had moved too far away from South Georgia. Few were brought in that could give the quality of meat needed.
