Title
Caain whales caught at Whiteness
Date Of Photo
8th February, 1903
Description
Caain whales ashore at Whiteness. On the morning of the 24rth August Whiteness Voe became the scene of an exciting whale hunt. Owing to so many men being away at the fishing, only 8 boats could be mustered, but before darkness as many as 130 whales are driven ashore below Hoove. The work of killing and securing them from the rising tide occupies most of the night. The blubber is purchased by Hay and Co.l to be boiled down at Blacksness. Over the wekend large numbers of people visit the scene; on Monday so many go from Lerwick that it is impossible to secure a vehicle after mid-day. "As so many of the visitors were from the south, the band camera was very much in evidence ande innumerable "snapshots" of the dead whales were secured". (The Shetland Times)
