Looking down towards Hoswick Beach from below Cullister; much activity on the beach - school of caain whales ashore. Fourareens, yoals and sixareens laid up, many people occupied flensing. At centre of beach, some activity under shearlegs. This was the famous event when a school of 331 whales were driven at Hoswick. The Sandwick men, led by Sinclair T. Duncan, of Hoswick, refused to give up the laird's one-third share. John Bruce, the laird, took action in court, but the finding was against him. He carried the matter to the Court of Session and lost again. Henceforth all whales driven in Shetland were the property of the men who killed them.
