Onboard the Queen Mab
1880s
Group lying at the stern of the yacht QUEEN MAB; John Irvine, Dan Mitchell, James MacWatt, Alexander Mitchell. Helm and ensign can be seen. (Irvine, a shipbroker, is the photographer of this collection. The three at right are all solicitors). Yacht belonged to one (or both?) of the Mitchells. Daniel Mitchell and James MacWatt were later drowned from the QUEEN MAB. MacWatt, age 27, went to the rescue of Daniel Mitchell, solicitor, between the Hog of Neap and Stava Ness Point, June 1889. (Daniel Mitchell was a prominent solicitor, having successfully defended the Hoswick whale captors in 1888). The Queen Mab was built at Lerwick by Lowrie Goodlad.
