Shetland patterned jumper of natural colours. This patterned jumper was hand knitted for a Shetland man, Ralph Paterson, by his wife in 1921. The yarn is un-dyed, and the style is typical of the 1920s.

During the Second World War Mr Paterson was imprisoned in Hong Kong between 1940 and 1945 - a period of four years and eight months - during the Japanese occupation.

Mr Paterson had this jumper with him during that time. It was precious to him as it was warm and comforting, but more than anything, a link with loved ones at home.
