Klibber (Pack Saddle)
2003
By July it was time to start 'flittin' (moving) peats from the moors. This often meant travelling long distances. Shetland ponies equipped with 'klibbers' were used to carry the peat back to the croft.

'Klibbers' were placed on the pony's back. The horns on either side of the saddle held the nets that the baskets of peat were placed into. Still in good condition despite being heavily used this saddle still has its original girth attached.

When the first roads were built around 1850 horse drawn carts for 'flittin' became popular and the use of 'klibbers' began to decline. However, in remote parts of Shetland such as Lambhoga in Fetlar, they were still being used well into the 20th century.
