The first German plane spotted over Shetland was on 27th October 1939. It was in Sullom that the first bomb dropped on British soil landed, 13 November. The intended target was flying boats moored. The only casaulty was a rabbit. The event made headline news across Britain and photographs (this included) were taken purporting to show the unfortunate animal! However, the rabbit in the photos were bought at the Lerwick butsher, J. Herd.
The idea that the popular song "Run, Rabbit, Run" commemorated it is nonsense. The song was first performed in the show "The Little Dog Laughed" which opened at the London Palladium on 11 October 1939, performed by Flanagan and Allen. The bomb merely popularised the song.
