Air Vice-Marshal Sturley Simpson, Acting Officer Commanding 18 Group, R.A.F. Coastal Command congratulating Flight Lieutenant Jock Cruickshank, V.C. On 17 Jul. 1944 a Catalina from Sullom Voe intercepted German submarine U-361 west of Lofoten, Norway. In the fight, the submarine was sunk, and the aircraft's crew killed or wounded. Seriously wounded Flight Lieutenant Cruickshank was able to fly back to base, where the Catalina was beached to stop it sinking. For exceptional bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, personally presented by the King. The last surviving V.C. of W.W.2, he celebrated his 100th birthday in 2020.
