Description
Smack LK 141 Petrel in Bressay Sound, with whaler Earl of Mar & Kellie beyond. Seen from the Esplanade. The Earl of Mar & Kellie was a steam whaler of Dundee. She arrived in Lerwick on Wednesday 31 Oct. 1888, from the Davis Straits, having taken 200 white whales estimated to yield 25 tons of oil. She had been 34 days from Cumberland Gulf, having been driven 50 miles east of Shetland by a heavy westerly gale. Petrel was built at Southampton as a 52 ton cutter in 1826. She was registered under Merchant Shipping Act, Official No. 18481, and belonged to Peter Garriock, Lerwick. She sailed on 2 Nov., bound for Norway in ballast, for a cargo of ice. She was caught in rough seas which caused her to turn completely over, and incredibly righted herself, and equally remarkably no lives were lost. She was driven into the harbour of Bremangerpol, near Bergen, on 19 Nov. in such a condition as to constitute her a total wreck. Certificate of registry delivered to H.B.M. Vice-Consul at Bergen, and her registry was closed 29 Dec 1888.
