Description
West Side, Uyeasound, looking up from the end of the pier to A. Sandison & Sons premises. The Waster Warehouse (salt store), shop, office, house. On gable of the salt store is the ice house. Behind the shop are herring station buildings, with vast stack of full barrels; cooperage, gutter's barracks. In the ebb below lies a partly broken up drifter hulk. Furthest right are the Cottages. Extreme left the steps of Greenwell's Bød, with ice crusher nearby. Men up ladders on gable of Musselbroch, building extension. Barrels etc. lie outside the salt store, crates outside the shop. The pier is of stone with a wooden extension; derrick at end of stone part for hoisting boat's cargoes. Rails run up the pier for bogies to trundle barrels of herring etc.; a ship's mast lies on bogies. An anchor lies in the ebb at left of pier. Notes: during First World War the building with dark roof, behind the Cottages, was used as the garage for the field gun. In working of white fish they were dried on the beach at left of pier; there was also a built beach behind the cooperage. See collection of Sandison box labels in museum. There was another derrick on the end of the wooden pier extension.
