Hoswick Whale Caa
Date Of Photo
14th Sept. 1888
Description
Looking across Hoswick Beach from the west; much activity on the beach - school of caain whales ashore. Many people occupied flensing. This was the famous event when a school of 331 whales were driven at Hoswick. The Sandwick men, led by Sinclair T. Duncan, of Hoswick, refused to give up the laird's one-third share. John Bruce, the laird, took action in court, but the finding was against him. He carried the matter to the Court of Session and lost again. Henceforth all whales driven in Shetland were the property of the men who killed them.
