This primitive plough made an open shallow furrow by pushing the soil away to either side, rather than turning the soil over, as we know today. Its effectiveness was increased by ploughing the ground in criss-cross fashion. Said to be good for shallow or rocky ground but less suitable for oatland, which was harder to plough.

They largely died out in the early 1800's although there is one reference to one being used as late as 1864 in Shetland.
